Perth Poetry Club this Saturday 6th June 2026, 2pm-4pm,
has wonderful poets Gary Colombo De Piazzi & Aileen Hawkes + Open-mike
at The Moon Café, 323 William Street Northbridge and on ZOOM.
Gary Colombo De Piazzi fell into poetry in 2003 as a means to resolve and release thoughts and emotions that plagued him. The sense of liberation and the creative joy he experienced created an interest and determination to explore the power and wonder of words. Whilst he has dabbled with traditional forms, he prefers the freedom of free verse, writing purely from the heart without constraints of form and syntax, to mix and mesh words to draw an emotion, raise a point or shift a perception. Conveying simplicity with perceptivity in haiku is his holy grail.
From 2009 to 2024 he was heavily involved with WA Poets Inc in a voluntary basis on the committee and still holds an executive position with Creative Connections Art & Poetry Exhibitions.
Gary De Piazzi will be reading from his recently updated and revised edition of ’The Pinnacles; a Natural Experience’, an exploration of nature through photography and poetry. This book will be available for purchase at the discounted price of $25, cash or EFTPOS.
Aileen Hawkes Bio….
I am an educationalist who specialised in the area of teaching English as an additional language or dialect. This involved running the New Arrivals centre at John 23 during the war in Vietnam and then helping teachers teach Aboriginal students in State and Catholic systems plus lecturing at Notre Dame.
This meant that I spent a lot of time visiting all the Catholic mission schools in WA including those in the Kimberley where I found that painting and poetry were a fun way to teach SAE both ways while maintaining first languages.
I also spent several years as adviser to secondary teachers in the nine schools that make up the Ngaanyatjarra lands school. These are located near the border close to Uluru and Kata Juta. This was an amazing experience during which I learnt so much from the Aboriginal people and Elders who befriended me. As I had always written poems about events that affected me, such as the battle with cancer, it inspired me to write about these so as to share my amazing experiences with others.
After retirement I became involved in groups such as OOTA, Voice Box and subsequently the Perth Poetry Club. I have been fortunate in having some poems published over the last few years in anthologies such as ‘Into the Wetlands’, ‘Locus’, and ‘Tempus’.
