BARRY, KEVIN & CELLO ARE STILL ON, BUT DEANNE HAS HAD TO CANCEL
Perth Poetry Club this Saturday 1st November, 2pm-4pm, has wonderful poets Barry Sanbrook & Deanne Leber, with Kevin Gillam playing Cello + open-mike
at The Moon Café, 323 William Street Northbridge and on ZOOM
Barry Sanbrook is a novelist, artist and poet. He has had successful one-man exhibitions of his paintings, published two novels and has had many of his poems published in various magazines and on-line.
Much of his inspiration comes from travel both overseas and in the outback of Australia where he camps regularly with his wife and their two dogs.
He emigrated from UK in 1968 and settled in Perth. A mechanical engineer by profession he always lent to the arts. A member of WA Poets Inc he has a strong interest in Japanese poetry including haiku and haibun.
Recently a collaboration with Fremantle artist Peta Miller led to a very successful exhibition of her paintings and Barry’s poetry, which led to the publication of the book ‘Brush and Pen’.
Deanne Leber is a Boorloo-Perth poet, based on Whadjuk Noongar Country. She has published three collections of poetry: Book of Days (2006), Constellations (2021) and How to Throw Stones (2025). Constellations was a finalist in the International Book Awards 2022.
Deanne’s work persists in the smallest of spaces and reaches beyond the page.
She probes gaps with rhymes, sometimes stars, sometimes minutes, sometimes lines.
She is constantly a rush of drafts and erasures.
She is proficient in public transport and has a PhD in writing.
Deanne has a lot to say about mental health, wellbeing, love and quasars.
She has a lot to feel about language and the way it floods her pores.
Deanne has seen her name in print, in books, journals, online, on floors and walls.
She has heard her poetry above the static hum of radios tuning in.
She is always searching for the unfinished thought.
Deanne’s third collection, How to Throw Stones, was launched at the Perth Poetry Festival 2025. The book was written during a time of spiritual, physical and psychological crisis.
Kevin Gillam is a West Australian poet and cellist. He has had four books of poetry published and is currently Chairperson of the Out of the Asylum Writers group.
Cello Bio: Cello was made by Antonio Sannino in Naples in 1890, and is number 45 of 76 constructed. Sannino also made violins and violas.
