Afeif Ismail is an international bilingual Sudanese-Australian writer, playwright, poet, dramaturg, and human-rights activist. Extracts of his works have been translated into French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Swedish. Afeif’s poetry, short stories and personal essays have been widely published, including in the Westerly, the Fremantle Press Anthology of Western Australian Poetry, Fremantle Poets 3: Performance poets, Unlimited Futures and others. In Arabic, he has published eight poetry collections and three creative essays collections.

Afeif won the prestigious 2022 Ballina Region for Refugees Seeking Asylum Poetry Prize. Also, he was awarded the Naji Naaman’s Literary Prize in Lebanon in 2015. Barking Gecko Theatre Company in WA commissioned and produced his children’s play, “The African Magician,” and it was nominated for the Australian Writers’ Guild Award for Best Children’s Play in 2011. 3 Seeds (3 short plays) presented by Always Working Artists at the Blue Room Theatre in WA in 2014. He was awarded the Australian National Playwrights’ Conference (ANPC) Bursary in 2008. International Playwright Observer at the 2014 New Visions/New Voices Workshop and Festival, at the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC, USA.

Afeif has a Master's in Creative Writing from Macquarie University, NSW. He has worked for more than twenty years with Vivienne Glance to transcreate his work from Arabic into English.

Vivienne Glance has two poetry collections: The Softness of Water (Sunline Press) and A Simple Rain (Lethologica Press) and is published in journals and anthologies including Westerly, Mascara Review, Text, and Indian Literature.
She’s an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia where she completed her PhD (Creative Writing).

Also a playwright, she has had over 20 plays developed, published or produced, and her first novel, ‘Semblance’ was shortlisted for the 2023 Dorothy Hewett award.

Vivienne and Afeif have been collaborating in their practice of co-transcreating for over 20 years
