Saturday 23rd August, Kate Wilson & Gaye McPhie + open-mike at The Moon, on Zoom!

.
Perth Poetry Club has wonderful poets Kate Wilson & Gaye McPhie

this Saturday 23rd August, 2pm-4pm, at The Moon Café, 323 William Street Northbridge and on ZOOM.

Kate Wilson wrote her first poem at age seven while perched on the garage roof at her family home in Donnybrook. When she discovered poetry slams in 2008, she began shouting her poems from the rooftops. Kate has travelled to many events over the years, busting out rhymes in bookshops, bars, barns, and backyards. She has also lent her voice to unique collaborations with Perth choirs and Busselton dancers and has been a guest at festivals like Newstead Live in Victoria where she won the Troubadour Foundation Prize in 2020. Kate's passion is to create a spark of recognition in her audience — a moment where the listener's heart says, "Me too! I'm not alone."

When Gaye McPhie discovered Harriet the Spy at age nine, she was inspired to keep a secret notebook of poems and musings under her mattress. Later, her love of writing became homogenised in the corporate world where she wrote press releases and marketing copy for many years. She left the sector longing to express poetry from her heart. In 2019 she joined Jaya Penelope’s Women’s Writing Circle; in this body are gardens, and found home. As an adoptee of the Forced Adoption Era, she writes poetry to understand her experience, especially themes of loss, exile and connection, and how love and beauty live alongside grief. In 2024 she was the winner of the KSP Writer’s Centre’s Annette Cameron Encouragement Award for her poem Timelines and has been longlisted in WA Poet’s 2025 Poetry d’Amour for her poem Knead.
