Perth Poetry Club has wonderful poets Shey Marque & Kaya Ortiz + open-mike

Shey Marque is an ex-medical scientist turned writer of poetry and short fiction. She was Coordinator of the Katharine Susannah Prichard Writers’ Centre, former Chair of WA Poets Inc Committee, and currently serves on the Board of Writing WA. She also coordinates The Patient Poet Program.
She has featured at the QLD Poetry Festival, Perth Poetry Festival, York Festival, and Perth Writers’ Festival, and was the inaugural winner of the Queensland Poetry Festival Emerging Older Poet Award 2018.
With an interest in collaborating with other arts, her work has been adapted to short film, and choreographed for dance.
Shey’s poetry has twice won the KSP Poetry Prize, won the Poetry d’Amour Poetry Prize, and been a finalist in the Bruce Dawe Poetry Prize, Gwen Harwood Poetry Prize, and the Tom Collins Poetry Prize.
Her prose poetry series won the Blue Nib Chapbook Award which also features in her current collection The Hum Hearers, shortlisted for the Dorothy Hewett Award 2023, and was released this month by UWA Publishing.
Her previous collections are Keeper of the Ritual (UWAP 2019) and Aporiac (Finishing Line Press, USA, 2016).
Kaya Ortiz is a queer Filipino poet of in/articulate identities and record-keeper of ancient histories. Kaya hails from the southern islands of Mindanao and Lutruwita/Tasmania and is obsessed with the fluidity of borders, memory and time. Their writing has appeared in Portside Review, Westerly, Australian Poetry Journal, Best of Australian Poems 2021 and After Australia (Affirm Press 2020), among others.
Their poetry collection Past & Parallel Lives won the 2024 Dorothy Hewett Award, and is being published by UWAP in 2025. Kaya lives and writes on unceded Whadjuk Noongar country, where their name means ‘hello’ in the Noongar language.
