Perth Poetry Club has the special Poets and Sound with wonderful words, music and sound by Susanne Harford, Micheli Johnston-Maszniew, Mar Bucknell, Jonathan Mustard, Splodge + open-mike this Saturday 1st March, 2pm-4pm at The Moon Café, 323 William Street, Northbridge, and on ZOOM.
Susanne Harford
“A total influence by the original Surrealists causes me to believe many of us of this WA–Antipodes section of the current Western World seem to have, fairly suddenly, almost completed our surrender to ‘Yoga-ism’.
As in dogmat-ism, nepot-ism, and toady-ism, we turn, ostrich-head-in-sand-ism-like, (if we cannot see it, it cannot exist), seeking relief from the spectre of evermore genuinely sinister and ghastly other ‘isms’.
Thus, as we now move towards WA Autumn, our March 2025 costumed poetry-dance-sound performance work here, by Micheli and me, aims to ironically highlight this peculiar local cultural ‘advance’.”
Micheli Johnston-Maszniew
“This year 2025 ‘Yoga’ gives me the opportunity to use my fabric re-imaginatitons again thru’ surrealist poetry expression with my sister, Susanne Harford at the Perth Poetry Club.
I enjoy the embodied poetic expression of re and de-construction of people’s everyday pathways both ridiculously banal and extreme, mystic and traditional as they search for purpose and meaning in their lives using layering, recycling, reinventing and the will to continue on.”
Jonathan Mustard
For the last 35 years, Jonathan Mustard has been one of Perth’s most innovative composers writing mixed media works for theatre, dance, concert and stage. A large part of his output over the last decade has been music for dance, most notably with renowned WA choreographer, Chrissie Parrott. Since the early 2000s, he has developed a practice in video and animation. Through his collaboration with Parrott, and more recently with photographer, Martine Perret, he has extended his work in this medium, providing virtual sets, lighting design elements and installations for performance and gallery environments in tandem with creating original music and sound designs.
Since 2017, Mustard has been a keen attendee and contributor to the Perth Poetry Club and has been feature poet on at least two occasions.
The two sound-poems being performed are new realisations of old works dating back to 1995 and 2018.
‘Life Drawing 1’ is a ‘vocal’ sound poem for 7 performers who are banned from engaging their vocal cords in this piece. This version will be a combination of multi-tracked vocals and live performer.
‘Mellers Memorial Humouresque’ is a piece for keyboard player manipulating samples taken from an interview with a well-known musicologist.
Mar Bucknell
Mar has been playing around with poetry and sound since 1981. He joined the poetry and sound terrorist cell The Magick Trousers shortly after they formed in 1996. In 2006 he started the poetry and noise duo Catastrophe with Ray Grenfell and they performed at Perth Poetry Festival and Putting on an Act at PICA. Since 2011 with Chris Arnold he has curated and performed at eight poetry and sound events at Perth Poetry Festivals.
Splodge
Splodge is a mistaken object connected to a mouth that makes noises that they’d love to share.
