Perth Poetry Club has the launch of Andrew Burke’s collection Historic Present and Memorial Celebration + open-mike this Saturday 16th December, 2pm-4pm, at The Moon Café.
Andrew Burke was the first feature at Perth Poetry Club on 28th March 2009, nearly 15years ago. He helped kick-start the club, give it some immediate gravitas. Andrew died in May this year, and his posthumous poetry collection Historic Present will be launched at the Club this Saturday.
Deanne Leber and Andrew’s wife Jeanette will say words on the day in memory of Andrew and launch Historic Present. The collection is available for sale ($15) on the day.
Open-mikers are encouraged to read their favourite poem of Andrew’s – a celebration of Andrew and his poetry. But also don’t be afraid to read your own poems as Andrew would have enjoyed that. We will have pizza as well – Andrew would have liked that as well.
Andrew Burke (born 1944 in Melbourne, Victoria, died 23 May 2023 in Perth) was a contemporary Australian poet. Early in his working life, he pursued a career in advertising as a copywriter and creative director. In the 1970s he had received prizes: the Thomas Wardle poetry prize of 1973 and in 1977 the Tom Collins poetry prize.
He switched to academia as a literature and creative writing lecturer in middle age. He received a MA in writing from Edith Cowan University in 2002, and a PhD in writing in 2006.
He has lectured in Australia and China, and read his poetry to audiences of all ages in the United Kingdom, Singapore, China, and throughout Australia.
His poetry has been included in Western Australian and Australian anthologies. Collections of his poems exist in print and online. Andrew has his own blog site, the excellent http://hispirits.blogspot.com/. His last blog was in April this year. Andrew died a month later.
