Perth Poetry Club this Saturday 20th August 2pm-4pm has wonderful poets Peter Burges, Leni Shilton (NT) + open-mike at the Moon Café and on Zoom.

Peter Burges is retired, and lives in South Fremantle, WA.  He self-published his first poetry collection in 2019 and has had poems in Cordite, Creatrix Anthology, Poetry d’Amour, LOCUS, UNUSUAL WORK, and The High Window. He won third prize in The Tom Collins 2019 competition, and was Highly Commended in the Poetry d’Amour 2019 competition.

Peter lived and worked for twenty-five years in China, Thailand, Hong Kong, the Middle East and Vietnam as a business/education consultant and manager of IDP Education, an Australian student recruitment, testing, English training and exhibition business.  Prior to working with IDP, Peter worked on the family farm at Broomehill, WA; studied philosophy and theology for four years at Marist Fathers’ seminary in Sydney, NSW; completed a BA in English Literature at UWA; worked on a Fred Hollows trachoma program in the north of WA; managed a Change Management division in the then Department of Social Security, and spent two years as a Buddhist monk engaging in pastoral activities and intensive meditation.

He is currently seeking a publisher for his second collection of poetry (... always, homewoods bound ...), and working on poems focused upon his overseas experiences.

Leni Shilton is a poet, teacher and researcher. She grew up in Papua New Guinea and Melbourne and has lived in Mparntwe |Alice Springs for many years. Leni has written two verse novels: Walking with camels – the story of Bertha Strehlow (2018 UWAP), which won the 2020 NT Chief Ministers Fiction Book Award, and Malcolm – a story in verse (2019 UWAP).

Leni is a judge of national literary awards including the 2020 Stella Prize and the 2021 Dorothy Hewett Award for an Unpublished Manuscript.  In 2022 she was awarded the KSP Centre residential fellowship and a major Arts NT Grant to work on her third novel.  In July she received the 2022 Inaugural Born Writers Award, for a collection of her poetry.
