Perth Poetry Club has wonderful poets Josephine Clarke & Ananda Barton plus open-mike this Saturday 1st June, 2pm-4pm, at The Moon Café and on Zoom.
Jo Clarke lives and writes in Walyalup but grew up in the karri forests of the South West. Her first collection Recipe for Risotto was published in 2020. She has been a member of Out of the Asylum Writers’ Group since 2005, and was a member of the collective that organised the Fremantle Voicebox poetry readings from 2007 – 2022. Her work has been published in various Australian journals.
As a first generation Australian, of Italian descent, her poetry and short stories reflect how culture survives migration through the domestic and the sensory. How do space, landscape and technology affect our experience of living, of family? Josephine’s published poetry collection looks back to her childhood on a farm in Pemberton and at contemporary life in historic Fremantle.
In a reading collaboration, she and Ananda will read a duet of poems around common themes.
Ananda was born in Perth, grew up in the South West, and divides his time between the two. He met Josephine when he was a child and would never have imagined that they would write poetry together. Ananda has lived a varied life, studying at university, unemployment, protesting against Pauline Hanson, being in the army of an unrecognized nation… His passions include odd, interesting and bizarre books, flotsam and jetsam, eclectic shops, religious ceremonial, and West Australian politics. He is employed in the West Australian public service, where he is paid to live in the past. Ananda is currently fascinated by the Young England movement, an 1840s political group, described by their contemporaries as ‘young men in white waistcoats who write spoony poetry*.’
*Spoony’ - sentimentally or foolishly amorous (Oxford).
Open-mike as usual.
