This Saturday 19th June 2pm-4pm we have wonderful poets Van Su Yun (Singapore) + Ananda Barton + open-mike at the Moon Café and on Zoom.
At the age of 15, Van Su Yun won 1st prize in an intra-school e-poetry contest despite not knowing anything about what distinguishes e-poetry from poetry in general. The school’s chosen judging panel – comprised of erudite teachers – evidently did not know either, hence awarding her 1st prize. She took a long hiatus to learn “useful” things meant to make her a productive member of society. It didn’t work, so she went back to dabbling in a good many things without actually studying or comprehending any of it, including poetry.
Her achievements in glorious ignorance include: her poetry being selected for Poetry On The Move 2020, an online event hosted by the Centre for Creative and Cultural Research in the Faculty of Arts and Design, University of Canberra; performing a solo zoom show combining dance and poetry to great reviews; and acing customer service with hotel guests she never personally serves to the befuddlement of management (who still have no idea that she drops random pieces of poetry in random places for guests).
She counts her friendship with poetry penpal Ananda Barton among her best achievements in her literary life, despite the fact that Ananda’s doing all the work.
Ananda Barton (aka Ananda) was born in Perth, grew up in the South West, and has spent much of his life traveling between those two places. When not working as a State public servant or writing poetry he can be found beachcombing or haunting second-hand bookshops. Ananda’s poetry is wonderfully quirky, often with reference to the past but also with recognition that societal change takes time.
